HOSTIS HUMANI GENERIS

HOSTIS HUMANI GENERIS

‘ Sketch of Crying Woman’ by Moyo Ayo-Ogunmuko

It was on the 14th day of April that our girls were taken,
to a place unknown, far and hidden,
some came back and this brought hope to our ship which was sinking,
still 230 or more of them are missing,
and 8 more taken,
and this has turned our morning to evening,
and our joy to mourning…

Look at their mothers they do not know what to feel,
last night and the other nights they didn’t eat their meal(s),
it is with the thoughts of the girls that they go to bed,
thinking if they are alive or probably dead,
they wake up in the morning to a pillow soaked with tears;
only to rise up to shed tears, tears and more tears
tears that fall endlessly like raindrops to the ocean;
and pleads earnestly for nothing but compassion;
tears that scream out “please bring back our daughters.”

Please bring back our girls,
our passionate appeal
Please bring back our girls we won’t stop to squeal,
till all our girls in our arms we can feel.

Look at their fathers, they try to be men and thus hold their tears back,
they sit, they stand, soliloquies and stare blank
since the 14th they haven’t had their baths,
of what good is soap and water when
they never leave their mats,
Its on their mats they pray and spend most of the hours of the day,
and at night they still return there to lay,
since the first night they have been unable able to sleep,
they stay awake, keep watch and console their wives who cannot help but weep,
they would not cry because they do not want to be thought weak,
but more and more weary do they grow week after week,
In their eyes you can see the pain,
It be as clear as water and as paper sheets plain,
you’ll see it residing peacefully inside of their eyes
whilst violently and aggressively reeling out cries of “Bring back our girls.” ,

Take a minute, look at the siblings of the girls you hold captive,
they are unkempt,sad and restive
every night since the first night, they cry themselves to sleep,
there is no big sister to sing to and rock them whence all they did was weep,
and they in the mornings wake up with the names of the girls atop their lips,
comprehending not why anyone would take their sisters for keeps,
or as their parents describes it “sell them off for tips.”
Take a look at the girls you have in your custody,
they do not deserve to be in anyone’s snare,
they are kids so vulnerable and weak
helpless, powerless and at your sight squeak,
since a forth night ago a quarter of them have fallen sick,
now they have grown pale, feeble anorexic and are barely able to speak,
they cry, brood and think what at home would be happening,
Of the state in which their parents and siblings would be in,
they cry and cry until their voices fail them,
and they continue still until tears betray them,
those tiny drops of water that have all along been their companion,
tiny drops filled with pain and dejection
flowing boundless-ly and incessantly,
pleading, begging, praying that they be let go…
Please let them go,
PLEASE BRING BACK OUR GIRLS.
